SOUNDING CITY- CITY INTERVENTION AND STORYTELLING
Aarhus University; 3 people group
Location: allotments Fjordglimt, Struer, DK
We focused our research on the east part of the town Struer in the Jutland's region of Denmark. (urban population: around 10 thousand people)
The Fjordglimt allotments we explored are located next to the industrial, mainly abandoned part of the town. It created a unique, semi isolated atmosphere, where the quietness of forgotten spaces overlapped with the peacefulness of gardening and slow living.
We had the opportunity to exhibit our sonic experiment to public in the small abandoned building at the Venø Bugt bay.
The sonic data we collected consists mainly of waves, birds, insects. We also gathered sounds of everyday activities around the holiday houses, conversations with the local population. People met on our way were asked to explain the concept of breathing and the connection they had with the land.
While designing the final poster for our exhibition I decided to focus on the simplicity of the act of breathing and it’s visual representation. The poster is made with the use of cyanotype paper- which uses the most basic principles of photography.
Archival photographs of the allotments. They were also printed on the translucent paper and presented in the window space.
By including them we wanted to emphasise the stillness of this area against the passage of time.
In this short film I wanted to capture the peacefulness and harmony of the world concentrated around the allotments in Struer.
